Procedure

  • The delivered parts are first intensively pre-cleaned on a washstand using an engine degreaser.
  • After pre-cleaning, the parts are further cleaned in an ultrasonic bath.
  • Thereafter the parts go into two different cleaning baths for further cleaning.
  • Then the parts are immersed in a special yet gentle chemical solution for approx. 24 hours.
  • After that they are neutralized in a water bath.
  • Then they come into a chemical immersion bath where a mechanical process also takes place.
  • Finally, there is the all-important step, there-application of the finish which is done by a modified process of electro-polishing.
  • The last step is a neutralization bath again before they are thoroughly dried.

This part was very strongly oxidized on delivery and in some places the oxidation had already penetrated deep into the material.

This part was already glass-blasted when it was delivered, whereas a very coarse media was used which made it more difficult to reconstruct the surface despite the fact that it was actually "ruined".

The part shown in the photo was received painted black when delivered. The paint had to be chemically removed before the actual surface reconstruction process could begin.
